How it Work

“ETCO” Hybrid Chiller has a same refrigerant cycle as a normal water chiller with the main equipment are

1) Compressor (vapor compression device)

        The Chilled Water Pump pumps the chilled water to the Air Handling Unit (AHU) or Fan Coil unit (FCU) to extract heat from the air-conditioned areas or even to pump this chilled water to cool down the machines. When the chilled water is heated from the heat load, it will cause the refrigerant in the evaporator (Cooler) to change form liquid to vapor state and being compressed into vapor at high pressure and temperature. Then it will be sent to condensate at the condenser (Patented Plate-Tube Evaporative Condenser), which the main function is to extract heat from the refrigerant by using the evaporate of coolant water (Latent Heat mainly) with using the ambient air involved in the cooling process.

              The coolant water will be dripped, and it flows down between the plates of the Plate-Tube Heat Exchanger. At the same time, there is a low speed fan on the top of the chiller that draws air to flow against the coolant water flow direction. The coolant water in contact with the refrigerant (through Plate-Tube Heat Exchanger) will be evaporated and some will fall into the bottom of the water sump where there is a small circulating pump pumping the water back to use. Coolant water will be added to the water system (normally using tap water) to replace the evaporated water portion. ( 2 gpm/100 tons of hybrid chiller capacity VS 300 gpm/100 tons of water-cooled chiller capacity) 

Therefore, this system uses a ridiculously small amount of circulating coolant water compared to water- cooled chiller systems. And there is no need to have a cooling tower or a chemical treatment system that needs to be used to maintain water quality as well. When a high temperature and pressure refrigerant is extracted the heat, it changes the state from vapor to liquid state and flows through a pressure reducing device to return to the evaporator (Cooler) and working as a continuous cycle.
